Alfa Romeo Spider Common Problems

Alfa Romeo Spider (Duetto, Series 1–4, 1966–1993)

  • Body corrosion is one of the main weak points of classic Spiders. The sills, wheel arches and underbody are particularly vulnerable.
  • Electrics – weak contacts, problems with ground, connector oxidation.
  • Oil leaks – a classic problem with old Italian engines.
  • Suspension – wear of silent blocks and ball joints, which affects handling.
  • Carburetors (on early versions) – difficulties with adjustment and sensitivity to fuel quality.

🔧 Alfa Romeo Spider (916, 1995–2006)

  • Electrical wiring and electronics – sensor failures, instrument cluster “glitches”, problems with the central lock.
  • Suspension – rapid wear of the front arms and silent blocks.
  • Roof (convertible) - leaks through seals, breakdowns of the folding mechanism.
  • Twin Spark engines - stretched balance shaft chains, increased oil consumption.
  • V6 Busso - reliable, but requires regular maintenance (timing belt should be changed every 60,000 km).
  • Corrosion - better than the classic, but problem areas: rear wheel arches and bottom.

🔧 Alfa Romeo Spider (939, 2006–2010)

  • The weight of the car is heavier than its predecessors, which affects the dynamics and suspension.
  • Suspension - rapid wear of ball joints, stabilizer struts and rear multi-link suspension.
  • Electrics - problems with CAN bus, sensors, comfort unit.
  • Diesel versions (JTDm) - possible problems with EGR, turbine and particulate filter.
  • Petrol JTS – prone to carbon deposits on valves and increased oil consumption.
  • Power steering – fluid leak, weak hoses.
