KIA SPORTAGE Engine

G4NA

The base unit of the Kia Sportage is a bright representative of the Nu family, which was designed specifically for installation on the group's most affordable crossovers. However, the mid-displacement engine with multi-point fuel injection turned out to be so successful that it was also installed on other mass models - from the Elantra to the Sonata.

Its trump cards: fast response to the gas pedal, good elasticity and thrust-to-weight ratio with small dimensions. The common trouble of this series is a fragile ceramic catalyst located too close to the cylinder block, and the low rigidity of their walls: a violation of the geometry during overheating leads to an increased “oil burner”.

Main characteristics:

  • working volume - 1999 cm3;
  • layout: in-line, four-cylinder, 16-valve, with two overhead camshafts (DOHC) and valve lifters;
  • variable valve timing system: D-CVVT;
  • maximum power - 150 liters. With.;
  • maximum torque - 192 Nm at 4000 rpm;
  • maximum speed - 184 km / h;
  • acceleration time to 100 km / h - 11.4-11.6 seconds;
  • fuel consumption - 7.9-8.3 l / 100 km;
  • declared resource - 200,000 km.

Engine Advantages:

  • well-thought-out design, easy access to nodes for diagnostics and repair;
  • high prevalence, cheapness and availability of spare parts;
  • the ability to work on 92-m gasoline;
  • valve clearance adjustment is not required.

Flaws:

  • high oil consumption, which becomes even greater by 100,000 km due to wear of the CPG;
  • weak main and connecting rod bearings, wear of which can lead to crankshaft rotation;
  • tendency to overheat due to insufficient cooling system capacity - especially for crossovers with all-wheel drive or protective grids on the radiator;

a small resource of the timing chain - no more than 150,000 km of run.

It can be considered lucky that these problems appear almost simultaneously - closer to 100,000 km. As the numbers on the odometer grow, notice the alarming symptoms and troubleshoot in a timely manner - this is much cheaper than an engine overhaul. With proper care and regular oil changes every 10,000 km, the G4NA can travel up to 300,000 km

G4KJ

The Theta series, to which this engine belongs, was developed jointly with Chrysler and Mitsubishi and is deservedly considered a major achievement of designers. The aluminum motor with a new cylinder block design eliminated the tendency to scuff the CPG, supplied with an electric pump, an oil pump with a change in performance and many other advanced solutions. It is installed only on older all-wheel drive versions of the Sportage with increased requirements for power, reliability and torque.

Main characteristics:

  • working volume - 2359 cm3;
  • power system - direct fuel injection;
  • intake manifold geometry change system VIS;
  • maximum power - 184 liters. With.;
  • maximum torque - 237 N m;
  • maximum speed - 184 km / h;
  • acceleration time to 100 km / h - 9.6 seconds;
  • fuel consumption - 8.7 l / 100 km;
  • declared resource - 200,000 km.

Engine Advantages:

  • good stock of traction at any speed;
  • high economy and fuel efficiency;
  • available service and spare parts;
  • great operating experience, which made it possible to study well the possible problems of the motor and rid it of "childhood illnesses".

Flaws:

  • exactingness to the quality of consumables and fuel - not lower than the 95th gasoline (otherwise the valves will quickly become clogged with soot);
  • lack of hydraulic lifters: valve clearance must be adjusted every 90,000 km;
  • risk of rotation of the liners due to wear of the balance shafts;
  • complaints about the operation of the phase regulator E-CVVT;
  • sensitivity to regular overheating.

The thermal regime of this Kia Sportage engine should also be controlled because it is installed only in conjunction with a six-speed automatic transmission, which also does not like high temperatures. Otherwise, the motor behaves quite predictably and can only annoy with increased noise.
