PEUGEOT 508

The Peugeot 508 is a D-class model, which is already in production in the second generation: the world debut in 2018 and the start of sales in early 2019. It is interesting that the first generation of the Peugeot 508 replaced two models at once (407 and 607), simultaneously returning the “500” index from the past: remember the Peugeot 504 and 505. It is also interesting that the first Peugeot 508 was a classic SW sedan or wagon, but the new 508 received a “fastback” body (this is what the company’s representatives call it, trying to avoid the word “liftback”): access to the trunk is opened by a large lifting rear door with glass, there is also access to the salon. The traditional station wagon SW has already been presented in the world.

 

The first generation Peugeot 508 debuted in 2010, in 2014 the car was updated - it can be identified by the front: such a 508 was seen in articles earlier. The current Peugeot 508 is a second-generation car. So far, only “center” versions have been brought to us: a “fastback” body, engines with a capacity of 130-180 hp, gasoline or diesel. But I really want to see a full-fledged 508 GT (225 hp) and a 508 SW station wagon. The article presents a Peugeot 508 GT-Line with a 2-liter 180-horsepower diesel, plus a brief mention of the Allure version.

 

The turbodiesel develops an impressive 180 hp, flavored with 400 Nm of thrust - good numbers for a low and relatively light 508. Every acceleration, every acceleration is filled with dynamics and power. We don't drive, we fly. With the strength of the wind, which is about to turn into a hurricane, but for now remains on the short leash of the accelerator and your right leg.

The new “automatic” EAT8 with its soft and completely imperceptible switching contributes to the feeling of continuous acceleration.

It is important that the box not only “clicks” the gears up well, but also logically resets them down if acceleration is necessary: smooth acceleration - we hold the gear and pull the motor, active acceleration - you can drop one or two gears and increase speed. By the way, the best operating range of the engine is just in the middle zone of 1.5-4 thousand rpm: the engine pulls weakly below, it doesn’t turn it up at all, the engine almost suffocates.

 

But the transmission is tuned so finely that it almost always manages to keep the engine in the desired speed zone. I note the excellent stability at high speed: at 120-130 km / h, the 508th flies forward like a locomotive, clearly showing “I can do more” - both in terms of engine power reserve, and in confident “hold” on a straight line, and in the immunity of the lateral wind.

 

But the main pleasure from the Peugeot 508 is not even acceleration, but driving. The small steering wheel provides small hand movements, which gives a sense of sharpness: the slightest touch - and the car already writes an arc. Moreover, it does this without persistence with a “nose”, with minimal rolls: it is so simple and natural, as if you are controlling the 508th with the help of the power of thought.

It seems that here is a turn, turned the steering wheel and the car quite normally went to the right or left. But he added speed - and the Peugeot 508 is still unshakable, quick in reactions, understandable in sensations.

 

And if you tumble into the right turn more than usual, and then shift to the left? The new Peugeot 508 executes every command unconditionally and in German clearly, while demonstrating French-Italian playfulness and fascination in habits. It's not boring with him.
