What problems do a 2011 Cadillac CTS have

CTS, as a rule, is sold with a 3.6 engine – atmospheric 311-horsepower (for a coupe – 322-horsepower) V6 with direct injection. The motor can hardly be called a model of reliability, but there is no alternative. Occasionally there is 2.8 for 211 hp. with distributed injection, which is cheaper both in maintenance (due to the absence of high-pressure fuel pumps) and in terms of taxes. But it will be very sad to go.

Think carefully about whether you need such a machine in principle. Liquidity is extremely low, the return of the 3.6 engine is not more than moderate (in combination with the tax, this is especially sad), and reliability is not that completely bad, but you can find much better among European and especially Japanese competitors in the class. It is worth buying only from an irresistible craving for American chopped design.

The model did not have a large-scale restyling. True, in 2011 the design of the grille and the Cadillac logo slightly changed. In addition, a more powerful version of the 3.6 engine with 318-322 hp appeared, which received the LFX index and differs from the 311-horsepower 3.6 LLT in a different cylinder head design with an integrated exhaust manifold and other modifications. The powerful 3.6 LFX is found only on the CTS Coupe.

The paintwork is below average by premium standards. Look for chips and rust spiders – the trunk rots especially hard. If you are going to buy, bargain and restore the paintwork immediately after the purchase, do not bring it to through holes.

Almost all CTS engines are from the GM High Feature engine family, introduced in 2004. 2.8 has the index LP1, and 3.6 – LLT. As already mentioned, a 322-horsepower 3.6 LFX is also available on the coupe since 2011. In addition to them, in other markets, CTS was also equipped with 3-liter engines of the same series (LWF), as well as 3.6 with distributed injection (LY7) and a powerful supercharged 6.2 (LSA) already from the Small Block family.

On engines 2.8 and 3.6, the timing chains serve less than the average belt – they are pulled out by the first 70, or even 50 thousand km.

High pressure fuel pump at 3.6 is also very short-lived, and often dies up to 100 thousand. Fortunately, it is relatively inexpensive.

Radiators often leak: both the engine and the automatic transmission. Also check the box hoses – they often get snotty, and driving with automatic transmission oil starvation is a dangerous occupation.

The automatic transmission here is the American GM 6L50. As with all modern multi-stage automatic machines, the problem of rapid wear of the torque converter lining and contamination of the oil with dust from it is most relevant here. It is better to change the oil every 50-60 thousand, and at the second change, also hand over the torque converter for repair, without waiting for the death of the valve body. In addition, the 6L50 had childhood illnesses with the oil pump, but by 2008 they were resolved and do not show up on the CTS.

Do not forget also about the need to change the oil in the rear differential and, if the machine is four-wheel drive, then also in the transfer case. The easiest way to do this is at the same time as changing the oil in the automatic transmission.

Be sure to check the cardan shaft (outboard bearing and spider condition): it is expensive and can only be changed as an assembly. Method of indirect diagnostics – vibration on the go.
